Erich discovered his passion for improvising 40 years ago. He plays a range of instruments including recorders, flute, guitar and wind controller, though his specialty is keyboards. After completing his PhD work in Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina he spent 20 years doing research and teaching Neuroscience and Anatomy, but never gave up his love for music and teaching it. He has taught individual and group lessons for the last 35 years, both for improvisation and conventional music lessons. He performs regularly with the Latin band Saludos Compay, his world-beat vocal jazz group One Sun, and other local groups. He teaches privately in Chapel Hill, directs the Emerson Waldorf School Jazz Band and instructs music invention for the Piedmont Youth and Family Orchestra. Since 2013 he is the founder and Executive Music Director for the Blame It On My Youth Jazz Orchestra, a premier jazz ensemble of teen musicians. He strives to help people of all ages learn to express themselves through playing music.
Soludos Company - Latin Music
SALUDOS COMPAY takes the audience on a musical tour that features traditional, contemporary, and original music from Latin America and the Caribbean. This amazingly versatile trio keeps toes tapping.
Lead vocalist/guitarist Pablo Valencia, from Chile, sings a wide range of styles. He is as much at ease with a reflective bolero as with an upbeat salsa. The group performs a number of Valencia’s acclaimed original compositions, such as the romantic Cancion Para Dos, the rumba Bello Amor, and the very upbeat salsa song Entumido.
On keyboards, Erich Lieth adds spice to the strong Latin rhythms with improvisational piano solos and bass.
Chuck Nolan, lead percussionist, intricately weaves the rhythm patterns, be it for a subtle bossa nova or a danceable cumbia.
