Five wines rated 91-97 pts, including a vertical comparison of 2004 and 2012 single vineyard Cabernet??? This is a don't miss dinner, folks. Freemark Abbey has hit pay dirt big-time, with plenty of terrific offerings that are being released now… as in early 2016. They are huge crowd-pleasers. To complement these fantastic wines the Pazzo team has assembled a stunning menu to make this a evening a really special treat. Now more about the wines of the evening…
2014 Freemark Abbey Napa Chardonnay – 91 pts Wine Advocate - The 2014 Chardonnay is a non-malolactic 100% Chardonnay that’s 45% barrel-fermented. The wine is sensational. There are nearly 10,000 cases of this wine, which shows loads of white peach, honeysuckle, green apple and melon notes in a distinctive, clean, steely Chablis-like style. There is some tropical fruit, such as pineapple, but the overall character is one of great acid, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and no real oak influence. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.
2012 Freemark Abbey Merlot - 92 pts Wine Advocate - A cross-Napa Valley blend, the 2012 Merlot is their largest cuvée (15,500 cases), and is composed of 85.2% Merlot blended with other Bordeaux varietals. Only 21% new oak is used, so the fruit component dominates. A dense plum/purple color is followed by notes of chocolate, berries, tobacco leaf, forest floor and mocha. This lush, fruit-driven, hedonistic, sensual Merlot can be drunk over the next 7-8 years.
2012 Freemark Abbey Cabernet Napa Valley – 93 pts Wine Advocate - A stunning Cabernet Sauvignon and a classic example of Napa viticulture, this blend of 75.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, was aged just over two years in oak. Loads of sweet blackcurrant fruit, cocoa, a touch of toast, earth, and baking spice are all present in this wine that has terrific fruit on the attack and mid-palate, a full-bodied mouthfeel, no hard edges and a luscious, opulent, gorgeously pure style. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. Although I wouldn’t be surprised to see it last longer.
2012 Freemark Abbey Bosche – 97 pts Wine Advocate - The classic 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Bosché Vineyard is 90.1% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest 9.9% Merlot, aged 26 months in oak. This is one of the iconic wines of Napa, and one of the great vineyard sources coming from Rutherford on foothill bench soils at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains. This is one of the finest examples of this wine I’ve ever tasted, and there have been many. The wine shows plenty of loamy soil notes intermixed with blackberry, cassis, cedar wood and spice box. It’s full-bodied, shows terrific intensity, a multi-dimensional mouthfeel and moderate tannin in the finish. It still needs cellar time - and 5-6 years should bring forth plenty of magic, but this wine will also last 30-40 years.
2004 Freemark Abbey Bosche – 94+ pts Wine Advocate - The 2004 Cabernet Bosche Vineyard, which sits on alluvial, gravelly soils in Rutherford and is one of Napa’s most famous vineyards, is absolutely brilliant. The blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot spent 24 months in French oak. This one is still young for a 2004. Its dense purple color, big sweet kiss of cola, vanilla, cedarwood, oodles of black currants and dark cherries, a hint of licorice and unsmoked cigar tobacco, make for a classic almost Pauillac-like style of wine. This is youthful, full-bodied, promising and should hit its peak in another 4-5 years and last at least another two decades.
As Chapel Hill's premiere residential, shopping, dining and entertainment destination, Southern Village is the ideal location for Chapel Hill's first hotel south of downtown. This summer construction will begin on an upscale 110-room Hyatt Place Hotel. The hotel will be located on US 15-501, between the Market Street and Arlen Park Drive entrances to Southern Village.
The Hyatt Place's front will face the highway and the rear of the hotel will face the Southern Village Apartments district. An attractive stairway to Barksdale Drive will make it easy for hotel guests to walk to the Village Center for dining, shopping and movies.
Southern Village was conceived around three guiding principles: design, density and destination. These founding ideals account for the neighborhood's charming small-town feel, with its emphasis on walkability, green spaces, pedestrian-friendly architecture, community and convenience. The hotel will build on these traditions in both form and spirit.
The fun starts this weekend! Check out the lineup for our amazing summer and join us for the first concert on Sunday April 12, 2015. See you at 6:00 pm!
The 2015 Southern Village Farmers' Market Application is now available. Looking for all categories of vendors.
