Celebrate Fall at A Stone’s Throw Gallery with Amber’s autumn hues

AMBER AT A STONE’S THROW GALLERY

Amber is a recognized gift for a November birthday and a 10th wedding anniversary.

Amber is sometimes referred to as “wearable sunshine!” It has been known and treasured since prehistoric times when it was believed to be sunlight congealing on the ocean waves.   It is actually a fossilized resin originating mostly from pine trees known as Pinus succinifera and formed millions of years ago. As a golden window into the past, amber often serves as a glorious tomb for ancient insects, plants, and even small animals.  Entombment of say, a wasp, would have happend something like this:  one fateful day a wasp settles on the sticky bark of a tropical tree that is oozing resin with the consistency of glue.  It becomes mired and dies.  Resin continues to drip down the tree, completely enveloping the wasp.  Eventually, the tree dies and decomposes, leaving behind the wasp in its golden translucency.

The first reported amber source was on the southern shores of the Baltic Sea.  Today, it is found in northern Europe, Russia and the Dominican Republic.  Two types of deposits are known:  sea amber, which is found floating, partailly submerged, or washed up on the seashore (mostly in northern Europe); and pit amber, mined from ground deposits.  Dominican Republic amber is probably the world’s second largest deposit.  Baltic material has been dated to the early Tertiary period, which means it is 45 million to 50 million years old.  The age of Domincan amber varies from 15 million to 40 million years.  The material has to be several million years old to even be called amber; otherwise, it’s called copal, a more recent resin.

Amber comes in a wide variety of colors, which suggest geographic origin.  Red, for example, is distinctive of Burmese deposits.  Dark brown and opaque amber is typically found in Borneo. Fine Baltic amber is available in a wide color range, including cognac, white, yellow, green, orange, cherry and brown.  Its transparency can range from completely cloudy and opaque to completely limpid and transparent. And amber is very light weight.  Plastic, often used to imitate amber, is heavier and will sink in a saturated salt solution, whereas amber will float.

Amber has enjoyed cycles of popularity since Stone Age Days.  And in America it was very popular during the Colonial period, the revolutionary period, the time of the War Between the States, and the Victorian era (1837-1901).  By the 1920′s, the importation of Baltic amber was second only to the importation of diamonds!  Martha Washington’s amber necklace may be seen in The First Lady’s Hall at the Smithsonian.  Today amber retains its popularity worldwide.

Always a help to scientists, a stingless honeybee in amber doubles the previously known age of bees.  Ash from a volcanic eruption in amber hints about conditions long ago and their effect on climate.  With amber, science and the imagination can truly meet!

A Stone’s Throw Gallery has a large assortment of Amber from the Baltic region, with jewelry pieces ranging in price from $12 – $300, most under $100.  Visit the shop at 600 Market Street to learn more about these autumn-hued stones, and to see this jewelry for yourself.

Candy collection from Dr. Bilal Saib’s dental office

Dr. Saib’s office participated for the first time this year in Operation Gratitude–a Halloween candy collection drive.  Dr. Saib offered $1/pound of Halloween candy brought in by children, and had the goal of collecting 100 pounds of candy.  The candy is then sent to Operation Gratitude, who includes it in care packages that they send to our overseas service members.

The drive was an overwhelming success, with the office collecting well over 100 pounds of candy, and shipping it off to this great cause.  This photo shows the 4 big boxes of candy being taken over to Ship-n-Shop!

Topaz: The November Birthstone at A Stone’s Throw Gallery

Topaz, the November Birthstone
Also for the 4th, 19th and 23rd Wedding Anniversaries

Old verse:
“Who first comes to this world below,
With drear November’s fog and snow,
S
hould prize the topaz’s amber hue,
E
mblem of friends and lovers true.”

Oscar Wilde wrote in a screenplay: “I have topazes as yellow as the eyes of tigers, topazes as pink as the eyes of wood pigeons, and green topazes that are as the eyes of cats.”  Well, green topaz doesn’t actually exist in nature, but irradiation of the stone can yield that color!   Natural colors of topaz are blue, yellow or brown, pink or red, and colorless.  What is called Imperial topaz (so named for having been discovered in Russia during the 19th century under the control of the Czar) is sherry-red, deep pink and reddish-orange.  Precious topaz colors are peach-orange and medium-golden.  Sherry-reds are the most prized and found only in Brazil, discovered in the early 18th century.  Pink topaz ranks as one of the rarest and most prized gemstones. Imperial topaz is sometimes heated to improve its color.  Blue topaz is usually light unless irradiated to a deeper blue. Two distinct colors are often seen in some topaz because of strong pleocroism (when different colors are absorbed by a crystal when light passes through it in different directions).

Some other locations where topaz is found are Sri Lanka, Myanmar (Burma), Pakistan, and several locations in the United States, including California, Colorado, Maine, Utah, and New Hampshire.

The earliest reference to the word “topaz” comes from the Red Sea.  Some sailors landed on an island in the Red Sea and found some gem crystals which they called “topazos” (from the word “to seek”).  But because it is believed that the island was Zebargad, the source of gem peridot, it is possible what was called “topazos” in antiquity is what we now call peridot. The real topaz we know today gets its name from the Sanskrit word “tapas” meaning “yellow fire.” And to the Egyptians, the color of yellow topaz symbolized Ra, the god of the sun.

St. Hildegard used topaz in the 12th century to cure dimness of vision.  In some cases topaz was actually ground up and then added to wine.  And it was also said if you wore topaz, you would be beautiful, intelligent, and have long life!!  So if you aren’t myopic and don’t want to drink it, at least consider wearing it!

Gem quality topaz occurs in pegmatite veins, and where topaz crystals occur, other crystals of gem value may also occur, such as tourmaline, aquamarine, amethyst, and garnet. Topaz crystals may be very large, some reaching several hundred pounds!  Topaz takes a high polish when cut as a gemstone and is very transparent. It also has few inclusions. In its pure form, this silicate mineral is colorless, but as mentioned above, impurities in the stone tint the crystals to nearly any shade of the rainbow.

Alternate November Birthstone:  Citrine Quartz
Also the 13th Wedding Anniversary

Citrine is a “tougher” stone than topaz because it lacks topaz’s perfect cleavage (planes of weakness in a mineral that may cause separation).  Citrine derives its name from the French word “citron” meaning “lemon,” aptly describing its predominant color, though its hue ranges from a pure yellow through orange-yellow to orange.  Medium to medium-dark tones are sometimes used in association with such colors and are referred to as “Madeira,” like the wine.  Natural citrine is actually somewhat rare, with the best material coming from Brazil.  Much of the yellow quartz seen in the trade today is derived from heat-treating amethyst to produce a citrine color, and the treatment is permanent. This process can just be mimicking nature, though, because it has been reported that some natural saturated color citrine occurs in areas where amethyst has been naturally heated by underground geothermal vents.

People once carried citrine as a protective talisman against the plague, bad skin, and evil thoughts.

Besides Brazil, other important sources for citrine are Bolivia, Madagascar, Russia, and the United States in North Carolina, California and Colorado.

A Stone’s Throw Gallery has Opals–the October birthstone

October’s Birthstone: Opal

The name Opal, birthstone for October, and the stone usually listed for the 14th and 34th wedding anniversaries, comes from the Latin “opalus” which can be traced to the old Sanskrit word “upala,” meaning precious stone.  Opal is a type of non-crystalline silica gel.  Millions of years ago this gel seeped into crevices and cracks in the sedimentary strata.  Through eons of time, and through nature’s heating and moulding processes, the gel hardened into the form of what we now see as brilliant opal which displays sparkling, prismatic colors that change and flash as you turn it in your hand.  This display is termed “play of color” and no two opals “display” alike!  It was not until 1963 with the development of the electron microscope that scientists could establish the true cause of play of color.  They found that opal is composed of minute spheres of silica in closely packed, ordered arrangements (picture a room filled with orderly-stacked ping pong balls!). White light passing through the transparent spheres is scattered (diffracted) by the array of the water-filled spaces between them, causing it to be split into its component colors. Each color is bent a different amount.   Larger silica spheres produce all the spectral colors (from red to violet), but the smaller spheres provide only shorter wavelength colors, such as green, blue and violet.

There are four aspects of opal color:  the underlying body color (black, white or gray); pattern (ranging from a broad flash across the stone to a pinpoint of color play); the number of colors displayed (multicolor with pronounced red is best); and intensity of color (i.e. brightness of color which should be retained in any viewing position).

Opals have been known for a long time.  Pliny wrote in the first century AD that opals are “nature’s own fireworks.”  A Roman senator, Nonius, preferred exile over selling his valuable opal to Mark Anthony for presentation to Cleopatra. Shakespeare declared opals to be “the queen of the gems.” Queen Victoria loved opals so much, she made them popular by often wearing them and by presenting one to each of her children.

The world’s largest gem quality rough opal was found in Coober Pedy, Australia in July 1989 and weighed 26,350 carats.  Prior to that the largest opal ever found was in 1956 and weighed 17,700 carats. It is called the Olympic Australia.

While opals are found on other continents, Australia is the principal source, producing more than 90% of the world’s supply. About 80% of this is WHITE OPAL (white body color) found mainly in Coober Pedy in South Australia where it has been mined since 1915 in that very desolate outback.  Lightning Ridge in New South Wales produces about 15% in the form of BLACK OPAL (dark body color), the most valuable except for the rare, transparent BLACK CRYSTAL OPAL. It was first discovered in 1902  where the opal is generally found at depths between 30 ft. and 90 ft below the surface in a layer of “opal dirt”  or claystone, immediately below a level of sandstone. BOULDER OPAL from Western Queensland accounts for the other 5% and is formed differently from other opal.  It is characterized by its association with ironstone, a hard rock material.  When cut, the ironstone is left intact, lending a dark background for the opal’s play of color and strength. Sometimes this opal forms as “YOWAH nuts,” which are not really nuts but small, rounded ironstone concretions often filled with opal.

Other sources for opal are Brazil, the U.S. (especially Idaho and Oregon), Slovakia, Mexico (producing the intensely orangey/red volcanic “fire” opal dating back to the Aztecs), and Peru ( the beautiful aquamarine to seagreen blue opal), just to name a few.

There have been interesting finds of opalized wood (Virgin Valley, Nevada) and opalized fossils (mostly in Australia).  And opal slices may be turned into what are called doublets (thin opal sections backed with a black material like chalcedony) or triplets, a doublet capped with a colorless quartz crown. Opals may also be finely inlaid with other gem materials to make up what is called gem intarsia.

Opals may be treated with wax, oil or plastic, and a synthetic opal was first produced in France in the mid-1970s which may easily be detected under magnification.

The alternate birthstone for October is Pink Tourmaline. Please see a later article on Tourmaline.

Visit A Stone’s Throw Gallery to view an intriguingly varied selection of Opals, plus an assortment of Tourmalines

A Stone’s Throw Gallery featuring Sapphires for September

Sapphire is the birthstone for September. Rubies and sapphires account for more than half the world’s glittering trade in colored stones. When the mineral corundum, the crystal form of aluminum oxide, has enough chromium in it to be red, the resulting gemstone will be called ruby; if enough titanium with iron, it will be blue sapphire. Lighter touches of chromium or in combination with other elements will produce pink, orange and other colors of sapphires called “fancy sapphires.” Sapphires show a full spectrum of colors, including color-change sapphire, which goes from a grayish blue in daylight to a cranberry red in incandescent light (found in Tanzania). Miners find more blue sapphires than any other color.

Religious teachers have glorified sky-blue sapphire because it symbolizes the heavens as the material on which the Ten Commandments were written, but the tablets were actually more likely made of Eilat stone, a stone found in Israel that is deep blue/green consisting of various copper minerals, or the tablets were quite possibly lapis lazuli. The Persians believed that the earth rested on a great sapphire, the color of which was reflected to give the sky its blue color!

The dark blue sapphire has also been favored by royalty, historically representing protection from harm in battle, from deceit, and from poisons. When Prince Charles gave Diana the 18 carat Ceylonese royal blue sapphire in 1980, the stone was catapulted into the favored ranks of engagement ring gems. The same ring was given to Kate by William.

Archaeological evidence indicates that sapphire was used as early as the 7th century BC because corundum beads dating from that time have been found at Megiddo. From Madagascar to Montana, sapphires of all colors are in the market. Madagascar is known for its very rich pink color; and Montana, especially in Yogo Gulch, for its natural (not heat-treated) saturated “cornflower” blue color, first discovered in the late 1800′s. Montana sapphire is America’s leading homeland gem. Historically, the most sought-after blues are from Kashmir, India, first discovered in 1881 high in the Himalaya Mountains. Kashmir produces the electric “cornflower” color that some Yogo Gulch sapphires have been compared to. These stones are called “cornflower” for their likeness to the beautiful, almost-fluorescent blue petals of that small plant. Pinkish-orange sapphires are second in value to blues if they are in large sizes. They are found in Sri Lanka for the most part and are called “padparadschas,” a word taken from the Sinhalese word for “lotus flower petal.” Sri Lanka has known at least three names: Ceylon earlier and before that, Serendip (from which comes our word “serendipity” named after repeated fortunate discoveries of gemstones by three Princes of Serendip!). Sri Lanka is a gemological wonderland and its fine blue sapphires are still referred to as “Ceylon blues.” Other principal sources for sapphire are Burma, Viet Nam, Australia, Pakistan and Thailand. Sapphires that can be certified as originating in Mogok, Burma are very fine and command a substantial premium.

Corundum can produce star stones and blue star sapphires have been known as the “gem of destiny” because the three crossed rays are said to represent faith, hope, and destiny. The Star of India, weighing 563.4 carats, is credited to be the largest cut blue star sapphire. It is displayed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Sapphires are very hard and tough stones, and wear well in jewelry. For clarity the ideal stone would have no eye-visible inclusions but would contain identifying characteristics that could be seen under magnification. These identifying inclusions are important in determining whether a sapphire is natural or synthetic. Many blues and all natural fancy-colored sapphires are routinely heat-treated. Stones have been heat-treated in some manner since 2000 B.C. but have not been done on a grand scale until the 1980s. Most heat-treating today is done in Thailand. There are no undesirable side-effects and the heat-treatment is permanent.

A Stone’s Throw Gallery has a lovely pair of earrings and a matching necklace in the store that are made of Sterling Silver, White Enamel and Faceted Sapphires.  They also have available an exquisite pair of earrings that contain Sapphires and other stones, which can be viewed on their website.  Just scroll down to item #KBG65.  Other pieces of sapphire jewelry, as well as beads and un-set stones can also be ordered.

News from A Stone’s Throw Gallery: Peridot, the August Birthstone

PERIDOT:

THE AUGUST BIRTHSTONE

Peridot, the pleasing bright green to olive green birthstone for August, is often called the “evening gemstone” because its color intensifies in the evening light.  But as early as 1500 BC  the Egyptians referred to peridot as the “gem of the sun,”  believing it fell to earth ejected from an exploding sun. And they weren’t far wrong… peridot is one of the few gemstones found in meteroites!  So prized was the peridot by the Egyptians that some historians suspect that at least some of the “emeralds” worn by Cleopatra were actually peridot!  The source for this revered gem was from St. John’s Island in the Red Sea ( 54 kilometers off the coast of Egypt), otherwise known as Zabargad (Arabic for peridot) Island.  It was once one of the most guarded locales in the ancient world.  This Island was still producing peridot up until WWII!

Another important historical source for peridot is Burma (Myanmar) which yielded the rough that cut the world’s largest (recorded) peridot, a gem weighing 319 carats now housed in the Smithsonian.  China produced fine quality peridot in the early 1990s but overexploited their deposits so that mining was halted a few years after discovery.  Soon after, very fine peridot was discovered in Pakistan in extremely inhospitable, dangerous terrain 15,000 feet up in the Kashmir region of the Himalayas.   The world’s largest producer today, however, is the United States, primarily in Arizona on an Apache Indian Reservation where the principal mining location is called Peridot Mesa. Here “peridot-clothed” basalt forms both the tops and sides of the mesa.   Peridot from that site can be mined only by Native Americans living there.

Peridot is never heat-treated to improve its appearance.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course at the Southern Village Club pool

Have your teenaged children ever considered becoming certified lifeguards?  If so, they may want to consider taking an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course at the Southern Village Club pool this August, being offered to  anyone 15-years or older. This is a great opportunity for them to get certified well in advance of next year’s pool season and get a jump on a job for next summer. Most of the club’s summer staff are neighborhood kids and they would like to make this opportunity available to anyone in Southern Village… not just club members.

The 25 hour course will be given over a 2 week period between August 8th and 18th, at a cost of $150.

Please see the attached flyer for more details or contact Lisa Soeters at manager@southervillageclub.com

News from A Stone’s Throw Gallery: Ruby, the July Birthstone

RUBIES—THE JULY BIRTHSTONE

RUBY is the JULY BIRTHSTONE, a hard and durable gemstone that is the first cousin to sapphire, the other member of the prestigious corundum family. It is also the traditional stone for the 40th wedding anniversary.

To qualify as a ruby, the stone’s color must be medium-to-dark orange-y red to purplish red. All other colors of corundum are considered sapphire.  Ruby’s fiery red color, due entirely to trace concentrations of chromium, is associated with passion, and it was an ancient belief that rubies possessed an inner flame which burned eternally.  This belief seems less far-fetched when one considers that many rubies actually glow with a natural fluorescent energy.

Ruby, known as the “Lord of the Gems,” has enjoyed thousands of years of preeminence.  Even today the finest specimens fetch the highest prices of any gemstone, including all but some very rare colored diamonds. Rubies of highest quality generally emanate from Myanmar (formerly Burma) where they have enjoyed an intriguing mining history for over 700 years.  Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) is another important source, but today the main source of rubies is Thailand.  Other sources include Afghanistan, India, Kenya, Pakistan, Viet Nam, Cambodia, and even North Carolina. Tanzania produces the world’s only source of opaque ruby crystals growing inside green zoisite.

Most rubies today are heated to permanently improve color and clarity.

A Well-Behaved Visitor at our Sunday Night Music Series

This adorable dog was obviously a fan of Trilogy’s music.  He paid perfect attention for the entire concert!  He was wearing a pack over his back, so that he could carry his own treat over one shoulder, and a treat for his owners over the other one.

Grant Llewellyn, Rhiannon Giddens & the N. C. Symphony give a triumphant performance in Southern Village!

The night was delightful, attracting over 4,000 people to our 12th annual performance on the Village Green by our North Carolina Symphony.  Led by the dynamic and charming Music Director Grant Llewellyn, and accompanied by gifted vocalist Rhiannon Giddens Laffan of the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, the Symphony performance was enchanting.  Ms. Laffan’s voice was very affecting and heartfelt, moving many people to tears!

Not only are these two incredibly gifted performers, they are both also extremely gracious, generous and down-to-earth.  Both of them stayed after the performance to mingle with the crowd!  We thank them and the rest of the orchestra for the gift of an incredible evening!

Farmer Foodshare Volunteers Needed: Get some fresh air & meet people, while helping to feed the hungry!

As part of the new Southern Village Farmers Market, we’re going to be incorporating the Farmer Foodshare hunger relief program.  The program raises fresh, local food (or cash to buy food) from farmers and shoppers and then donates it to local organizations that serve the hungry, malnourished or those most in need in our community.
We’ll have  a Farmer Foodshare Donation Station at our new Farmers Market, and we’re looking for local community members who might be interested in volunteering or being involved.  Volunteering is easy, fun and great for all ages!  You just have to smile, make eye contact, say thanks for donations and explain what we are doing. At the end of market, the donated food must be sorted and boxed, then weighed and recorded.  We may need volunteers at the end of the market to help deliver the food to local food pantries.
Last year, Farmer Foodshare raised over 20 tons of top quality fresh food for people at risk of hunger and we are  excited to bring the program to the Southern Village Farmers Market.
Please contact Bev Carr at bcarr@mcarolina.com or 969.7301 x231 if you want to get some fresh air and socialize, while helping to feed hungry children and adults in our community.

2nd Annual Tumble Gym Field Day was huge success!

We had a perfect day for our 2nd annual ‘First Day of Spring’ Field Day, organized by The Tumble Gym.  We had 16 activity stations, and hundreds of kids took part in the fun, each receiving a gift bag at the end.

Chapel Hill Daycare had a stepping stone-making activity that was a benefit for their ‘Preventing Obesity by Design’ playground building project.  The day was a success for them,  as families generously donated to purchase all of the available stepping stones!  We want to thank the cheerful Chapel Hill Daycare staff who not only ran their project, but helped with several other of the Field Day games.

Thanks go out also to Vanessa Moore of Stroller Striders (www.strollerstrides.net), who checked people in and provided treats, and  Dr. Annelise Hardin of Southern Village Pediatric Dentistry (www.southernvillagepedo.com) , who distributed gift bags and provided sugar-free lemonade–a very welcome treat on our warm spring day.

We also want to thank Lisa Soeters, who manages the Southern Village Club (www.southernvillageclub.com), and Aiden McVay,  a local middle school student & Red Cross certified babysitter, both of whom volunteered all day at the event.  Finally, unending appreciation goes out to the Tumble Gym employees and parents who planned and staffed the day’s activities!

Most of all, thanks to all of the parents who brought your adorable little children to Southern Village for the fun!  We enjoyed playing with them!

Merlion Pad Thai chosen as best in Chapel Hill/Carrboro

When Andy McMillan went on a quest to find the best Pad Thai in the area, he sampled the offerings of 13 different restaurants in Chapel Hill and Carrboro.  The result, as published in September in  ’The Mill’–the monthly publication of ‘The Carrboro Citizen’,–Merlion came out on top, in a category of its own.  For us Merlion fans, this is no surprise–we all love Merlion’s Pad Thai.

Exciting childhood obesity prevention program coming to Southern Village

We’re excited to announce that the Chapel Hill Day Care Center in Southern Village has been selected as the Orange County 2010 site for the ‘Preventing Obesity by Design’ (POD) project!  The school is now in the process of converting their playgound to an outdoor learning environment that will promote increased physical activity for children and thus forestall the risk of childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity is on the rise and now affects over 30% of 2-4 year olds in our state.  The POD project,  led by the Natural Learning Initiative, converts typical mulch-covered playgrounds into green landscapes which introduce children to the natural world and provide opportunities for active play and exploration.

POD is sponsored by the Natural Learning Initiative at N.C. State, Orange County Partnership for Young Children, and Child Care Services Association.  To educate the public about this unique program and engage the community in volunteering to help with the POD initiative, the group is holding an informational meeting at Christ Church on Wednesday, September 15th from 6:00pm-8:00pm.

Keith Henderson gets Southern Village all shook up!

Talented Elvis tribute artist Keith Henderson regaled the Southern Village crowd on Memorial Day with his second Elvis-invoking, high energy performance here.  In addition to his awesome back up band,  ’The Illusions’, Keith has now added a backup female vocal ensemble, ”The Sweet Inspirations’, headed up by his stunning and talented daughter Lauren.  Many thanks to Jim Walker of City East Sound,  not only for his amazing sound system, but also for making the gutsy decision to set up outdoors, despite the imminent threat of thunderstorms.  Jim’s gamble paid off, and the show went on!  The rain held off until some light sprinkles began near the end of the concert.

Fun at opening day of the 2010 Farmers’ Market

We’ve made a big change to this year’s Farmers’ Market, moving its location to Aberdeen Drive between the parking lot and the stage.  Opening day at the 2010 Southern Village Farmers Market brought out lots of fresh strawberries, all types of greens, meat, gorgeous flowers, wine & baked goods, from some of our favorite farmers from last year, plus Ben Whatley, who’s new to the market.  We saw many customers who were familiar from last year, plus lots of new faces.

In more news about the Southern Village Farmers’ Market, Seth Kingsbury, chef and proprietor of local restaurant Pazzo, has decided to have Pazzo underwrite the entire season of the Market.  The delicious items on Pazzo’s menu are heavily dependent upon the use of local produce.

The opening market had musical entertainment from ‘Touch of Brass’, a brass quintet, plus the Culbreth Middle School chorus, led by the energetic, inspiring and talented Mr. Michael Jones.

KidsZone attracted a lot of families who brought their kids out to play in our new, delightfully shaded location while enjoying free samples of strawberries.

Arts On The Green will return in 2011

What a fun day Arts On The Green was! The artists displayed an appealing selection of hand-created items, ranging from whimsical craft pieces and prints, to fine art, jewelry and furniture. Ambience was provided by musical groups Volunteer Brass Choir, North Columbia, Southern Routes and Chatham County Slim & Papa Mike. The Triangle Youth Ballet brought an afternoon of eclectic and very entertaining dance performances. Children were inspired to dabble with the art supplies that they found on the Kids Art Experience Table. Even the weather cooperated!

A great time was had by all, and the artists and performers are enthusiastic about returning next year. Once we set a date for next year, we’ll post it here!

We want to thank the many people who made this day possible–Deb Harris, Carolyn Doyle and Larry Favorite of the Orange County Artists Guild for organizing the event, all of the artists who displayed their gorgeous creations, Lauren Lorentz de Haas, the energetic and resourceful leader of the Triangle Youth Ballet, all of the dancers and musicians who performed, the Southern Village business people who volunteered to help run the event, the community volunteers, and officer Phil Smith of the Chapel Hill Police Department.  Danny Gotham and his crew worked hard to ensure that our sound system was perfect all day.  We of course also want to thank Market Street residents for their patience and cooperation as we closed off some of their usual parking spaces for the day and wreaked havoc with their traffic patterns.  We appreciate all of your cheerful efforts!

You Saved The Symphony!

UPDATE TO ‘SAVE THE SYMPHONY’ EFFORTS

Thanks to your overwhelming show of support, both financial and in your kind words, the North Carolina Symphony will return to Southern Village this year for its 11th annual free performance on the lawn.  Please mark your calendars for Friday, June 25th at 7:30, which is the date that the Symphony will be performing.

We’ve had a very successful fundraising drive to help cover the Symphony’s costs in performing here, but additional donations are still needed.    If you haven’t already done so, we encourage you to join your friends and neighbors in donating what you can.  Also, please pass this appeal on to anybody you know who may be able to help.

REMEMBER: All checks will be made out to the North Carolina Symphony, and all proceeds of this fund-raising effort will go directly to the Symphony.  Your donation is tax-deductible, and eligible for your employer’s matching funds if your company has a matching gifts program.  And one more piece of good news; all of the funds that we raise are eligible for the State of North Carolina’s matching gift to the Symphony!  This makes your contribution go even further in helping the Symphony survive their economic hardships.

Please contact Bev Carr at bcarr@mcarolina.com if you’re able to help.  If you wish to send a check, please make the check out to The N.C. Symphony, and mail or bring it to the following address:

Samuel Burns Sculpture Installed on The Green in Southern Village

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 19, 2009
Samuel Burns Sculpture Installed on Southern Village Green

'Redwood' sculpture by Samuel Burns
‘Redwood’ sculpture by Samuel Burns

CHAPEL HILL–Southern Village is participating in The Town of Chapel Hill’s Sculpture Visions program, a town-sponsored outdoor sculpture exhibition that runs from October 2009 to October 2010. Sculptor Samuel E. Burns installed “Redwood” today, an 18-foot-tall aluminum sculpture. It will remain on The Village Green for one year.  The sculpture is lighted at night, so that it can viewed and enjoyed in the evening.

Most of the sculptures selected for the exhibition are on town property, but the village center developers, D.R. Bryan, John Fugo and Christine Edwards, believed that The Village Green would be an excellent venue for public art.

Burns is a North Carolina native who had a career working in construction, including exhibit design and construction at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro. When he hurt his knee three years ago, he decided to devote himself to sculpture. Currently he lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he participates in an artist-in-residence program.

“I named this sculpture ‘Redwood’ because its form reminds me of the canopy of a giant redwood tree,” Burns said. The sculpture was recently on exhibit in Johnson City, Texas, and Burns drove it to Chapel Hill for the installation. “I am pleased with this location. The trees and the buildings in Southern Village frame it beautifully.”

Southern Village is home to another sculpture from the 2004-2005 Sculpture Visions program. ‘Golden Portal’, created by Wayne Trapp, is an eight-foot-high modern expression of the classic arch. The Golden Portal is in front of the building at 300 Market Street.

CHAPEL HILL, NC – North Carolina’s first stand-alone LEED® certified  SUBWAY® Restaurant on Market St. in Southern Village — will be officially recognized in a ceremony to take place on Monday, June 29 at 10A.

In fact, the store is only the second LEED certified store in the entire SUBWAY system that totals more than 30,000 stores as well as the first of some 740 SUBWAYS in NC.

LEED is a third-party certification program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED serves as a benchmark for rating environmental performance and occupant satisfaction for several building scenarios.

City, state and SUBWAY dignitaries will officially mark the unique distinction by presenting Franchisee Mike Abdallat with a plaque along with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

“All of us at NC SUBWAY Group are excited with the recent opening of the first SUBWAY restaurant in North Carolina to be built and operated in accordance with LEED standards,” said Tim Mann, chief operating officer, North Carolina SUBWAY Group, Inc. “We are especially appreciative to SUBWAY Franchisee Mike Abdallat who understood the importance of this initiative early on in the process. SUBWAY looks forward to many more LEED restaurants throughout North Carolina in the near future.”

“I am thrilled to receive a LEED certification and to be the first restaurant in the state.  It is a fantastic store in an incredible community.  I wanted my new ‘Green’ SUBWAY to compliment Southern Village and the community surrounding it,” Abdallat said.  “I believe customers, residents and merchants will see that we’ve created an inviting neighborhood, family-friendly restaurant. I could not have achieved this without the support of the building’s landlord, John Fugo, who backed my project 100 percent.”

Abdallat, who lives in Durham, owns two other SUBWAYS in Carrboro and Raleigh. He said his ‘Green’ investment was already paying dividends since his utility bills have been reduced by at least half. “I am sold on ‘Green’ and will definitely do another eco-friendly store.”

Since September ’08, SUBWAY and Abdallat have been working with Cary-based Green Tech Consulting, Inc. to earn a LEED certification for the Southern Village store. GreenTech worked with the U.S. Green Building Council to obtain the certification, complete the entire submittal application for review by the USGBC, and respond to comments and accept the final rating following USGBC’s review.

”We look forward to sharing what we have learned about applying sustainable principles and practices to the SUBWAY franchise to more SUBWAY locations,” said Liz Bowen, LEED AP, GreenTech Consulting, Inc. “SUBWAY is extending its concept of healthier lifestyle choices from the customer’s standpoint to the health and well being of the environment as a whole.  We are happy to be a part of this concept transformation.”

Designed to have an overall smaller environmental footprint by requiring less energy and consume less water, the eco-store elements for the SUBWAY restaurant include — recycled floor tile, high efficiency Energy StarTM rated HVAC systems, low flow and flush fixtures in public restrooms, less lighting power and more natural light for seated customers.  Overall, the new SUBWAY store was renovated within its existing shell, thus avoiding a new building footprint.

Additional eco-friendly elements of the SUBWAY store include:

  • Building materials used from sustainable sources and extensive use of recycled products and furnishings
  • LEED interior and exterior signage
  • Remote condensing units for refrigeration and ice-making equipment
  •  Energy StarTM rated kitchen equipment
  • Low VOC adhesives, sealants, paints and coatings
  • Recycling collection of post-consumer recyclable waste generated in-store
  • Forest Stewardship Certified (FSC) wood.

The SUBWAY is accessible by two Chapel Hill Transit bus lines and is walkable to numerous shops and services.
