Chapel Hill, NC – April 28, 2014. Market Street at Southern village brings its set of summer events into full gear this month. “A Southern Summer,” started on April 20 and saw over 100 people at its first Sunday Music Series concert. A Southern Summer will last until September 18 and includes an assortment of family-friendly activities. Such activities include farmers’ markets, outdoor movies, concerts, a food truck rodeo, theatrical performances and more. The North Carolina Symphony will be returning to Southern Village on June 8, but the Farmer’s Market begins this Thursday, May 1.
Southern Village Farmers’ Market
Thursday afternoon farmer’s markets will welcome new faces in the community, beginning with brand new vendors: Cape Fear Salsa and Pomegranate Kitchen. While Cape Fear Salsa offers barbecue sauces, salsa and spices made with nothing but fresh ingredients, Pomegranate Kitchen provides organic gluten-free vegan treats. Returning vendors like Valley View Farm, Core Banks Seafood, and Cates Corner farm, offer options ranging from grass-fed beef and seafood, to fresh fruits, vegetables, and honey. Southern Village Farmer’s Markets are on Thursdays from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra accompanies the Farmer’s Market on every third Thursday of the month until A Southern Summer’s end in September.
Southern Village Music and Movies
Southern Village’s own movie theater, The Lumina, will host outdoor movie screenings of new releases on Fridays and Saturdays at dusk for only $4. Screenings begin May 23 (Memorial Day Weekend). Sundays offer a concert series at 6:00 pm on the village Green featuring acts like The Durham Ukulele Orchestra, Southern Routes, The Retrobates and more. The Music Makers Relief Foundation will return with the Roots & Leaves Series before the outdoor movies on every Friday in June at 6:00 pm. In the past, the Roots & Leaves Series has showcased renowned performers such as Cool John Ferguson and Captain Luke.
